What is lavender oil?

Lavender oil is one of the most popular essential oils in the world due to its magical aroma and wonderful qualities widely utilized in the skin care, cosmetics, aromatherapy, flavor and medicine industries. It contains up to 40% linalyl acetate and 30% linalol. Linalol is a terpene alcohol that is non-toxic to humans, yet naturally antimicrobial. Linalyl acetate, its acetic ester, has a pleasant, sweet, fruity, aroma which along with its antimicrobial properties makes lavender unique. Lavender oil is soluble in all proportions of alcohol. There are two esters in the oil which are the primary source for the odor of lavender. Of these the principal is linalyl acetate and the second in linalyl butyrate. Various cultural practices can effect the ester value of Lavender oil. These include choice of cultivar, use of soil amendments, how and when flowers are gathered (optimal when flowers are fully expanded), how quickly the harvest is distilled, and how it is distilled (steam distillation is better than water).

Why Bulgarian Lavender Oil

Unique climate and soil conditions make Bulgaria one of the biggest producers of lavender oil in the world. The air humidity, cloudiness and precipitation in May and June contribute to the cultivation of lavender that yields a very high percentage of oil. Lavender is of fairly easy culture grown in almost any friable, garden soil. It grows best on light soil - sand or gravel - in dry, open and sunny places. Loam over chalk also suits it. Lavender requires good drainage and freedom from damp in winter. The plant flourishes best on a warm, well-drained loam with a slope to the south or south-west. A loam that is too rich is detrimental to the oil yield, as excessive nourishment tends to the growth of leaf. Protection against summer gales by a copse on the southwest is also of considerable value, as these gales may do great damage to the crop by causing the tall flower-spikes to break away at their junction with the stem. Lavender also is liable to injury by frost and low-lying geographical regions and those prone to become weatherbound in winter are to be avoided. Alteyas experts have spent years researching the best among best lavender fields so that we can establish some of the industry finest plantations and offer directly to your door the lavender oil previously available only to those traveling far away to the exotic valleys of Bulgaria.
